The Secrets to Saving Money: 貯金

The Rule of 72

The Rule of 72 is a nifty mathematical calculation used to estimate how long it will take a certain sum of money to double at a certain interest rate. Divide 72 by the interest rate or expected rate of return. If your money is invested at 8 percent interest,

72 ÷ 8 percent = 9 years
Emergency Fund:
  • Everyone should have an emergency fund.
  • Financial advisors suggest having enough savings in an easily accessible account to cover your living expenses for 3 to 6 months.
  • If possible, keep the fund in a separate account, such as a money market account.
Don’t Be a Victim of Advertising: 買い物は慎重に
  • Don’t use shopping as a form of recreation
  • Don’t shop on impulse
  • For items you really do need, look for sales and special offers.
  • Shop at outlet or discount stores.
  • Consider buying used instead of new.
  • Try to buy quality products without overpaying unnecessarily for features you won’t use or for a brand name that doesn’t necessarily means better quality.

Banking Issues: 銀行

  • Check (annual/monthly) service fees
  • Know interest
  • Buying 5 CDs
    • 6-month CD, 12-month, 18-month, 24-month, 30-month
    • You have a CD maturing every six months.

Work and Career:

  • The best jobs will prepare you for the next step in your career by teaching you valuable skills and providing on-the-job training.
In a large company, your duties are more likely to be focused in one specific area,
  • (小企業) whereas in a small company you can often acquire a wide variety of skills more quickly. Because of the lack of security, jobs in these companies may be more suited to individuals who don’t have a family to support…
  • Is the company financially stable?
  • How do the company’s products or services compare to those of the competition?
  • Company culture, atmosphere, and the quality of management.
  • What are its size, reputation, and growth potential.

Housing: 住居について

  • As a general rule of thumb, allow no more than 30 percent of your gross income for housing. If you’re making $35,000 a year, you shouldn’t pay more than $875 a month for rent. You’d be more comfortable at 25 percent, or $729 a month.
  • A good rule of thumb is to buy a house that costs less than 2.5 times your income.

Wheels:

The mileage a car gets has a big impact on your pocketbook. If you drove 20,000 miles a year in your Ford SUV that averages sixteen miles to the gallon, gasoline at $1.55 per gallon would cost you $1,937 per year, or $161 per month. Compare that to a Toyota Corolla, for example, that averages 36 miles to the gallon, which would cost $861 per year, or $72 per month, for the same 20,000 miles, a saving of $1,076 per year. According to Edmunds.com, the true cost to own the Ford SUV for five years is $48,234 and the true cost to own the Toyota Corolla for five years is $23,105, or $25,129 less than the Ford SUV. That’s difference of $5,025 per year.
