The Starfish and The Spider: ヒトデとクモ

発売当初に買ってすぐに読んだのですが、気が向いたのでいまさらながらメモ書きをアップしてます。

近年台頭してきたWikipedia, Craigslist, Skype, Apache, Linuxのような「中央で巨大な力をもったリーダーが存在しない、階層構造のない組織」は意外にも効率よく機能をし、社会や産業にとって新しいマネージメント体系の１つを創りだしているということ、組織マネージメントの変化がこの本の主題です。

This book is about what happens when there's no one in charge. It's about what hapens when there's no hierarchy. You'd think there would be disorder, even chaos. But in many arenas, a lack of traditional leadership is giving rise to powerful groups that are turning industry and society upside down.

それは中央に核となるリーダーが存在しない組織が（伝統的な考えでは働かないと考えるのが普通だが）、どうして巧く昨日し、目覚ましい成果をあげることができているのかということを、

1. ヒトデ（中央集権でない分散管理型の組織の象徴)
2. クモ (階層構造 (ハイエラルキー, hierarchy)で, 中央にbrainとなるリーダーが指揮を執る従来型組織の象徴)

という例えを使って巧みに説明がなされています。

ヒトデ (starfish)

• Starfish have an incredible quality to them: If you cut an arm off, most of these animals grow a new arm. And with some varieties, such as the Linckia, or long-armed starfish, the animal can replicate itself from just a single piece of an arm. You can cut the Linking into a bunch of pieces, and each one will regenerate into a whole new starfish. (p.35)
• In stead of having a head, like a spider, the starfish functions as a decentralized network. (p.35)
• In the words of the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu, "a leader is best when people barely know that he exists; not so good when people obey and acclaim him; worst when they despise him." (p.114-115)

クモ (spider)

• If you chop off the spider's head, it dies. It could maybe survive without a leg or two, an could possibly even stand t lose a couple of eyes, but it certainly couldn't survive without its head. (p.34)

読んでいて滑稽だったなと思ったのは、(アメリカが対象としている) テロ組織というのはヒトデ型の組織に分類されていると本文の中で明記されている。確かに見かけ上はリーダーが存在するのではあるが、仮に現在のリーダーがいなくなったところで組織が昨日を完全に失うことはない。ヒトデは足を１つ失ったとしてもすぐに新しい足が再生する。ヒトデ組織に対しては、クモ組織というのは必ずしも有効に対抗できない。むしろ、かなり通用しないようだ。現在の泥沼は少なくとも政権交代までつづくんだろうな。。。なんかこれはかつて昔に、旧日本軍がガダルカナル島にて銃剣突撃で、アメリカ軍の自動掃射の嵐に無謀にも対抗しようとした事実と相関性がある。根本的なパラダイムが変化してしまったことを早く認識すべきだな。。。太平洋戦争時代ならば物量の大小がモノをいったのかもしれないが、時代の変わった今では、クモは必ずしもヒトデには勝てないことを自覚すべきだ。
