高校生のインターンシップを受け入れる - Stanford Science Outreach Program (しかもpaid intern)
この夏うちのLISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna)グループでも、高校生のインターン (paid intern) を受け入れることになり、3名程来るようです。プログラムは約7週間くらいの予定なのですが、1人につき2人くらいの院生がつくことになる模様。
プログラムの目的には、このような記事でも言われているような、

In preparing Indicators 2004, we have observed a troubling decline in the number of U.S. citizens who are training to become scientists and engineers, whereas the number of jobs requiring science and engineering (S&E) training continues to grow. Our recently published report entitled The Science and Engineering Workforce/Realizing America's Potential (NSB 03-69, 2003) comes to a similar conclusion. These trends threaten the economic welfare and security of our country.
科学 (scienceおよびengineering)に興味を持たせ、全国的な理系離れ解消および、国の競争力の低減を防ぐことが根底にあるらしい。ということで彼らがやってくるまでに、目的に相応しい問題を幾つか提示できるように考えないといけませぬ。この夏もやることが盛りだくさんですな。
